Pikachu fans can still find a Light Ball occasionally attached to its trademark Pokemon. To get through the first part of the Forest, follow the path with tall grass in a coiling pattern to the northeastern corner of the Forest. A Blue Flute, which awakens sleeping Pokemon in battle, is just south of him, and then the path splits into a left side with tall grass and a right side that has two Bug Catchers: one with three Metapod, the other who has Ariados.
The exit is just left of this area, but if you still have your Cut slave, you can go to the southwest corner of the Forest to find a secret Max Ether in a bald spot in the tall grass. A Leaf Stone is north of this after a few staircases. Leave Viridian Forest after getting it. You'll emerge on the southern half of Route 2, on the other side from the section you explored for items earlier.
Ignore the tall grass, because there's nothing but early-game Bug-type Pokemon in it, and walk south toward Viridian City. You'll find two more Bug Catchers along the way: the first uses Butterfree and Ariados, while the second has Beedrill and Butterfree.
After him, Viridian City is just ahead in the south. Viridian City has a Gym, but you can't challenge for a badge yet because the Gym Leader is currently out. South of the Gym is the Trainer House, a unique location where you can battle Level 50 AI recreations of real-life players who are encountered with the Pokewalker device.
If you haven't communicated with anybody using the Pokewalker, then the only Trainer you can fight is Ace Trainer Cal, who has the final evolutions of the Johto Region's Starter Pokemon: Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr, each with a fairly competitive moveset. There's no real reward or point to the Trainer House, but it is a fun distraction. If you Surf or Cut to the man west of the Pokemon Center, he'll give you TM85 - Dream Eater, a Special Psychic-type attack that only works on sleeping targets and restores health to the user.
Leave Viridian through the south to find Route 1. In the Kanto-based games, the vertical path that is Route 1 serves as the quietest Route of those games; in HeartGold and SoulSilver, however, four Trainers have shown up here. The wild grass only has early-game rodent and bird Pokemon, so use the ledges to avoid it entirely. There's also a Black Apricorn tree, if you need it, to the southwest of the outpost from which you emerged. Pallet Town, the birthplace of the heroes and Rival in the Kanto-based games, is a quiet town with two houses the homes of the aforementioned characters and Professor Oak's Lab.
The left house is the home of Red, a former Pokemon Champion who was the main character in the Kanto-based games, while the right house is that of Blue, another former Pokemon Champion who was Red's rival. If you visit Blue's house between 3 PM and 4 PM on any day, his sister Daisy will groom one of your Pokemon, boosting its happiness rating.
You can stop in to see Professor Oak right now, but he'll only grade your Pokedex completion at this time. The tall grass of Route 21, just under Pallet Town, is only place where you can find Mr. Mime, a decent Psychic-type. The rest of the route consists of Surfing south, fighting off or using Repels on Tentacool along the way. You'll quickly encounter a female Swimmer with excellent taste who uses Seel and Dewgong. Near her are two islands of sand: the right one has a Fisherman with a Shellder, and on the left are a Fisherman who has four Corsola and a Bird Keeper using Farfetch'd, Fearow and Pidgeotto.
Below these sand mounds are a female Swimmer with an Azumarill, a male Swimmer who has a Quagsire and an Octillery and, on another island, a Fisherman with a Seadra. Continuing downward, you'll find another stranded Fisherman, this one owning Lanturn and Mantine; a male Swimmer who has Golduck and Poliwhirl; a mail Swimmer with a Seaking and Kabutops; and a stranded Bird Keeper using two Doduo and two Dodrio.
Cinnabar Island is just beyond this last group of Trainers, and a female Swimmer with a Slowking is hiding out just above the Island. However, you should land on the Island and heal in the Pokemon Center. If you do, you'll notice a guy standing just north of the Pokemon Center; if you speak to him, he'll introduce himself as Blue, the Viridian City Gym Leader and Red's Rival from Pallet Town, and explain Cinnabar's situation.
Blue won't leave the Island, so won't be getting your next Badge from him. Instead, Surf east from Cinnabar Island and onto Route Route 20 is another straightforward water route that will bring you to Seafoam Islands; once again, Tentacool will be a bother unless you have Repels. The first Trainer you'll encounter is a male Swimmer with an Azumarill; after him is a female Swimmer who has three Luvdisc.
Hidden in the middle of the water to the right of the Seafoam Islands entrance is DeepSeaTooth, the hold item that doubles Clamperl's Special Attack and evolves it into Huntail when traded.
Enter the Seafoam Islands when you finish getting it. To reach Seafoam Island's Gym, just take the ladder in front of you when you enter; otherwise, the lower stairs lead to the actual Seafoam Islands cave.
Thankfully, HeartGold and SoulSilver gave Blaine an actual Gym instead of the hole in a wall he received in the original games. The main gimmick of this Gym is that the subordinates are blocking your path to Blaine and you'll have to battle them to get them to move.
The first Scientist has an Arcanine; his optional comrade to the left has a Ninetales, and the mandatory Super Nerd to his right has a Torkoal. Blaine is then surrounded by three Trainers; the correct one to fight is the Super Nerd with Magcargo to Blaine's left, but you can battle the above Super Nerd's Numel and the right Scientist's Magmar as well. Feel free to heal back at Cinnabar Island before challenging Blaine. Even though he has a small team, Blaine is not as much of a pushover as you might expect.
All three of his Pokemon know his TM move, Overheat, which is a very powerful Fire-type attack that lowers the user's Special Attack by two levels; however, they're also all holding White Herbs to give them all one drawback-free Overheat, so be careful.
Blaine has countermeasures for Water-types, as Magcargo and Magmar know Sunny Day, which boosts Fire-type moves and weakens Water-type moves for five turns, and Magmar knows Thunderpunch, which is Super Effective against Water-types. If your Pokemon can survive Blaine's Overheats, however, this match is perfectly manageable.
Blaine's team is very susceptible to Ground- and Rock-type moves, with Magmar and Rapidash having fragile Defense stats, so Earthquake and Rock Slide are ideal moves; Rapidash will probably wear itself down with repeated Flare Blitz attacks as well. Meganium, of course, is going to want to avoid this battle, while Feraligatr will have a great advantage; Typhlosion won't have much to hit Blaine for Super Effective, though.
When you defeat Blaine, you'll receive the Volcanobadge and TM50 - Overheat, a powerful Fire-type attack that lowers the user's Special Attack by two stages after every use. Hello Guest. Log In. What that scientific research does in fact show is that a TM produces deep relaxation in some people, and b deep relaxation can have physical and psychological health benefits.
