It mentions the name of his father Jared and the name of his son Methuselah. And it mentions how long he lived on earth — years. However, Enoch is mentioned in two other places of Scripture — both in the New Testament. The Letter of Jude, vv. But God was already warning sinful man through the proclamation of Enoch. There, the inspired author cites the two main truths about Enoch brought out in Genesis 5, namely, that Enoch walked with God and that God took him.
But Hebrews expands on what we read in Genesis 5, specifically citing the faith of Enoch and the manner in which God took him, by translating him, so he did not pass through death.
Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah years and had other sons and daughters. Did he undergo some kind of conversion experience upon the birth of Methuselah?
We cannot say for sure. But for the last years of his earthly life, Enoch walked with God. And so, this marked the essential nature of his life. I do not believe so, even though God can and did appear at times in human form to talk and walk with men.
The Bible speaks, for example, of our obligation to walk in the truth, or walk in the light, or walk in the ways of the Lord. There are three main actions involved in walking with God. One is trust in God or faith in Him. This is, in fact, the basic requirement for walking with God. To be sure, it is our covenant God who has initiated this agreement to walk with us.
It is God who sent His Son to walk with us and among us on earth, so that by His life and death He might draw us to God. We also know, from the account in Genesis 5, that Enoch lived in the days shortly before Noah. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. Can you imagine how much it meant to God, that when He looked at the earth and His creation, and saw how far it had fallen, how everything was contaminated with evil, He still saw one man who walked with Him; whose intention was to please Him?
What an amazing example we have in Enoch. He lived a life of faith. It was a way of life for him; he walked with God. And because of his faith God took Enoch to be with Him. How much do you think it delights His heart when He sees those who are faithful to Him, those who walk with Him?
In the middle of this evil world we can have the testimony that we walk with God and that we please God. We do this by giving up our own lusts and desires, driven by love to serve God in obedience to His will.
