This condition is called appendicitis. Appendectomy is a common emergency surgery. The appendix is a thin pouch that is attached to the large intestine. It sits in the lower right part of your belly. If you have appendicitis, your appendix must be removed right away.
If not treated, your appendix can burst. This is a medical emergency. There are 2 types of surgery to remove the appendix. The standard method is an open appendectomy. A newer, less invasive method is a laparoscopic appendectomy. Open appendectomy. A cut or incision about 2 to 4 inches long is made in the lower right-hand side of your belly or abdomen.
The appendix is taken out through the incision. Laparoscopic appendectomy. This method is less invasive. Instead, from 1 to 3 tiny cuts are made. A long, thin tube called a laparoscope is put into one of the incisions.
It has a tiny video camera and surgical tools. The surgeon looks at a TV monitor to see inside your abdomen and guide the tools. The appendix is removed through one of the incisions. A laparoscopic appendectomy may cause less pain and scarring than an open appendectomy.
For either type of surgery, the scar is often hard to see once it has healed. Both types of surgery have low risk of complications.
A laparoscopic appendectomy has a shorter hospital stay, shorter recovery time, and lower infection rates. Recently, some studies have suggested that intravenous antibiotics alone could cure appendicitis without the need for appendectomy.
There are two types of appendectomy surgeries: Open appendectomy. This requires a 2 to 4-inch incision in the lower right-hand side of the abdomen. The appendix is removed through the incision. Laparoscopic appendectomy. This method uses from 1 to three tiny cuts allowing the doctor to insert a long thin tube into one of the incisions. The tube contains a tiny video camera and small surgical tools. The appendix is removed through one of the small incisions. A small tube may remain to help drain out fluids or pus. Once you've had an appendectomy, you will probably recover pretty quickly.
It feels good to get a bad appendix out. Most patients leave the hospital 1 to 2 days after surgery. The good news is that you'll be able to go back to all those normal activities within 2 to 4 weeks. The appendix is a small, finger-shaped organ that branches off from the first part of the large intestine.
When it becomes swollen inflamed or infected, the condition is called appendicitis. When you have appendicitis, your appendix may need to be removed. An appendix that has a hole in it can leak and infect the entire abdomen area. This can be life threatening. The surgeon makes a small cut in the lower right side of your belly area and removes the appendix.
The appendix can also be removed using small surgical cuts and a camera. This is called a laparoscopic appendectomy. If the appendix broke open or a pocket of infection abscess formed, your abdomen will be washed out during surgery.
A small tube may be left in the belly area to help drain out fluids or pus. You may never have given much thought to your appendix, the little pouch that's attached to the top of your large intestine. And you wouldn't have much reason to think about it, because it doesn't seem to do anything.
But if your appendix were to become swollen and inflamed, it would probably move to the front of your mind. The pain of appendicitis can make you quickly, and unpleasantly, familiar with this organ. You can get appendicitis if your appendix becomes blocked. That blockage could be from feces, a foreign object, or, in rare cases, a tumor. When your appendix is blocked up, bacteria that normally live inside it start multiplying like crazy, and cause an infection.
Recovery time from the lap appendectomy is short. Most patients who need a lap appendectomy enter the hospital through the Emergency Department and are taken to surgery within a few hours. Your child will be given antibiotics first and then be taken to surgery. This information is important because many patients with appendicitis appear to have a full stomach because of irritation from the inflamed appendix.
Once admitted, your child will not be able to have anything to eat or drink until after the operation. As the parent or legal guardian, you will be asked to sign a consent form before the anesthesia is given. Although appendectomy is the most common pediatric emergency surgical procedure, there are some risks. While your child is asleep, his or her heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and blood oxygen level will be checked continuously. Your child might have a breathing tube placed while he or she is asleep.
If a breathing tube is used, your child might have a sore throat after the surgery. To keep your child asleep during the surgery, he or she might be given anesthetic medication by mask, through the IV tube, or both. When the surgery is over, the medications will be stopped and your child will begin to wake up. After surgery, your child will be moved to the recovery room to allow the anesthetic to wear off. You will be called so that you can be there as he or she wakes up.
The most important role of a parent or guardian is to help your child stay calm and relaxed before the surgery. The best way to help your child stay calm is for you to stay calm.
