You may just have to give your lilacs another year to get over this. Sometimes a late freeze can knock the flowers or the start of the flowers right off the bush. If your lilac bush is not blooming, you might want to think back and think about whether or not there was a late freeze. If this is why your lilac bush is not blooming, your bush is fine. Next year, you should have a ton of blooms. There are some pests that can prevent lilac flowering as well.
These include scale insects and borers which cause damage within the stems of the bush. The most common cause is lack of adequate sunlight. Lilacs Syringa need to be planted in a location that receives at least six hours of strong, direct sun per day.
They are very tolerant of different moisture conditions as long as they are planted in well-drained soil. Too much moisture in the soil may not directly relate to a lilac bush's failure to produce blooms, it can affect the health of the plant and healthy plants are more likely to produce flowers. If you find that your soil is too moist, take steps to drain it or simple transplant your lilac bush to a more suitable location. Most lilac bushes produce blooms every year but improper pruning can result in a lack of blooms the following year.
The buds for the following year's blooms are set soon after the bush is finished blooming so timing is very important when it comes to properly pruning lilac bushes. If you prune your lilacs after the new buds have set, you may see few or no blooms the following year. To check on your roots, simply lift the lilac out of the container from the main stem. Do the roots look too compact?
It may be time to move your bush to a larger container. For more information on how to plant lilac bushes, this post will teach what you need to know.
